The CXCR3 ligands CXCL9 and CXCL10 are also required for the development of cerebral malaria [108], but they are expressed in a tissue dependent manner with microglia having increased levels of CXCL9 and astrocytes having increased levels of CXCL10, while the levels of both were elevated in neurons [107,108].
