Proinflammatory stimuli, including a diet high in saturated fat, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, hypertension, and smoking, trigger the endothelial expression of adhesion molecules such as P-selectin, E-selectin, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 which mediate the attachment of circulating monocytes and lymphocyte [3, 4]. This evidence concerns the gene VCAM1 and familial hypercholesterolemia.
