As biomarker, S100A8/A9 correlates with the extent of subclinical carotid and coronary artery disease, increases rapidly in plasma during myocardial ischemia and necrosis, and is associated with unfavorable prognosis in MI and heart failure patients and in patients undergoing carotid arterectomy (Table 1).
