Typically, human Tau is expressed ectopically in the developing Drosophila brain or visual system, resulting in neurodegeneration that bears several hallmarks of the tauopathies, including age dependency, abnormally phosphorylated Tau and, in some cases, Tau aggregates (e.g. Wittmann et al., 2001; Jackson et al., 2002; reviewed by Gistelinck et al., 2012). This evidence concerns the gene MAPT and tauopathy.
