Seven et al. measured nine serum fibrosis markers including tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1), tenascin-C, PIIINP, laminin, matrix metalloproteinase-2 and 9, collagen type IV, collagen type VI and hyaluronan to predict advanced liver disease in patients with chronic hepatitis B. They observed that levels of TIMP1 and HA and finally their combination are powerful markers amongst other measured serum fibrosis markers to be used instead of a liver biopsy (10). Here, TIMP1 is linked to chronic hepatitis B virus infection.
