Initial reports suggest fibulin-5 is expressed in the embryonic vasculature and neural crest, but is downregulated in most adult vascular beds; however, its expression is reactivated in injured vessels during neointima formation and in atherosclerotic plaques in the mouse model of hypercholesterolemia, suggesting that fibulin-5 regulates vasculogenesis [12,13]. The gene discussed is FBLN5; the disease is familial hypercholesterolemia.
