TGFB1 and atherosclerosis: These cells play a protective role in the progression of atherosclerosis through cell-to-cell contact and, in part, the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin- (IL-) 10 and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and their suppressive function is dependent on the transcription factor forkhead/winged-helix transcription factor box P3 (FoxP3).
