Studies identifying the carboxyl terminal of SPCA2 as an activator of ORAI1 and the interaction between SPCA2 and ORAI1 in MCF-7 breast cancer cells, suggests that the up regulation of SPCA2 may not only serve to promote Ca2+ secretion during lactation, but also as an activator of Ca2+ influx. The gene discussed is ORAI1; the disease is breast cancer.
