The finding that IL‐22 production by γδ iIELs is increased upon Salmonella infection suggests that γδ iIELs either directly interact with Salmonella and secrete IL‐22, as shown for lung γδ IELs exposed to Bacillus subtilis [57], or that local pathogen-exposed epithelial cells produce signalling molecules able to trigger IL‐22 production by iIELs.
