ABCC1 and cancer: Overexpression of the three human ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, ABCB1 (P-glycoprotein/P-gp; Juliano and Ling, 1976), ABCC1 (multidrug resistance protein 1/MRP1; Cole et al., 1992), and ABCG2 (breast cancer resistance protein, BCRP; Allikmets et al., 1998; Doyle et al., 1998; Miyake et al., 1999) has been proposed as one of the main causes of the MDR phenotype in resistant cancer cells.
