TLR4 and periodontitis: More specifically, despite the bulk of studies on aggressive and chronic periodontitis, TLR4 variants did not show any significant association, even though TLR4 has been shown to be overexpressed in gingival epithelial cells and gingival fibroblasts [95-97] in association with periodontal inflammation involving pathogens related to periodontitis, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans [98-101].
