GOLM1 and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: Among these two chimeras, we focused on GOLM1-MAK10 in the subsequent studies for the following reasons: 1) the 5' parental gene GOLM1 (also known as GOLPH2 or GP73), a Golgi membrane protein, is predominantly expressed in epithelial cells [14], the cell type that ESCC is derived from; and 2) the chimera GOLM1-MAK10 retains most of the GOLM1 sequence including the signal peptide/transmembrane domain that are required for secretion (see below and Figure 5).
