However, CSF findings in patients with CJD remain controversial; early studies reported an increase in levels of proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1β[8,9], but recent studies demonstrated normal levels of these classical proinflammatory cytokines and increased levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and IL-10[10,11].
