From these observations, and the absence of cysts in the kidney (Fig. 1E) and retinal degeneration (Fig. 6A,B), both of which are hallmarks of some ciliopathies, we concluded that Rab8a and Rab8b are not sufficient for the formation of cilia, at least during the lifespan of the DKO mice. This evidence concerns the gene RAB8A and retinal degeneration.
