There is substantial evidence from basic science of the immunonodulatory role of statins in patients with sepsis, who present reductions in proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6) [9], induction of haem oxygenase, direct alteration of leucocyte-endothelial cell interaction and a reduction in the expression of MHC II [29].
