CD4 and infection: While the importance of IFN-γ-secreting CD4+ T cells in resistance to Toxoplasma is well known to researchers in the field [28], [32], [33], and while the importance of anti-microbial inflammatory monocytes has recently become clear in the context of Toxoplasma and other infections [11], the present study is the first to reveal the functional link between CXCR3+ T-cell effectors, IFN-γ and inflammatory monocyte activation in tissues of the intestinal mucosa.
