In this study, we have demonstrated a stem cell epigenetic signature of the pluripotency-associated genes in cancer cell lines; in particular an increased expression of NANOG in metastatic HCC cells and in poorly prognostic human HCC tumors (Figure 1B, 1C, 2A, 3; Table 1), which presumably is associated with its promoter hypomethylated status and the suppression of p53. We also noticed that NANOGP8, encodes a protein with over 99.5% similarity to the authentic NANOG1 protein, is expressed in a variety of cancer cells, including HCT116 cells [34], [35].
