LYZ and periodontitis: It is abundant in saliva and plays an important role in the host constitutive defence system.61 It has been reported that salivary lysozyme was significantly lower in patients with gingivitis and periodontitis as compared with healthy subjects.62 In contrast, faecal lysozyme levels were significantly elevated in IBD patients.63 Further analysis will be required to elucidate the difference in lysozyme levels between saliva and the intestine.
