Our demonstration that necrotic cell preparation from retinal vascular endothelial cells induces significant Nos2 gene expression, but not Arg-1, suggests that dysfunction at the level of retinal endothelium may evoke inflammation in the eye, akin to findings of endothelial dysfunction along with retinal inflammation in diabetic retinopathy [56]. The gene discussed is NOS2; the disease is diabetic retinopathy.
