In a recent investigation of ceftriaxone as a potential therapy using a murine model of spinal muscular atrophy, the effects, in addition to the increase of EAAT2, also included the increase of the nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2, Nrf2, and the spinal muscular atrophy protein SMN (Nizzardo et al., 2011). The gene discussed is NFE2L2; the disease is spinal muscular atrophy.
