Enzymes involved in cholesterol to bile acid synthesis, specifically Cyp27, have been implicated to play a role in atherosclerosis (Björkhem et al, 1994) and thus it is feasible to suggest that increased Cyp7b1 expression by CLA, increases the removal of cholesterol metabolites from foam cells resulting in a less lipid laden foam cell phenotype. The gene discussed is CYP27A1; the disease is atherosclerosis.
