Although wild-type (WT) p53 can repress SREBP1c-dependent gene expression in mouse adipose tissue (Figure 4) (Yahagi et al., 2003), tumor-associated mutant p53 has been shown to bind and transcriptionally activate SREBP2 in breast cancer cells, resulting in the induction of the mevalonate pathway (Freed-Pastor et al., 2012). The gene discussed is TP53; the disease is breast carcinoma.
