KCNJ10 and ischemia: Since heteromeric Kir4.1/5.1 and homomeric Kir4.1 have distinct ion channel properties, such differences in the expression of K+ channels that participate in K+ uptake might result in the diverse ability of astrocytes to take up/distribute high extracellular K+ during increased neuronal activity or in pathological states, such as ischemia or trauma.
