Recently, using a conditional Cre-mediated deletion of the sulfatase-modifying factor 1 gene (Sumf1), which causes the LSD mucosulfatidosis, researchers were able to demonstrate that SUMF1-deficient astrocytes failed to support function and survival of neurons in a wild-type mouse (Di Malta et al., 2012). This evidence concerns the gene SUMF1 and mucosulfatidosis.
