TLR4 and malaria: The prevalence of TLR4 polymorphisms is differentin various populations, possibly as a resultof local infectious pressure and population migration.Sub-Saharan Africa has a high prevalenceof the Asp299Gly polymorphism which possiblyhas protective effects against severe malaria (15).However, because of its effects in increasing susceptibilityto severe bacterial infections, the TLR4haplotype containing only this SNP seems to havedisappeared from Asian and American populations. In contrast, Asp299Gly has been found inco-segregation with Thr399Ile (15, 22).
