The induction of severe liver disease and the suppression of HBV gene expression by αCD40 treatment reflect the vigorous expansion and functional differentiation of adoptively transferred COR93-specific CD8+ T cells, since these changes were not observed in αCD40 treated transgenic recipients that did not receive naïve COR93-specific CD8+ T cells (Figure 10E; gray bars, and Figure 10F).
