Among the Wnt components that are affected in AD, it was shown that β-catenin levels are reduced in AD patients carrying presenilin-1-inherited mutations (Zhang et al., 1998), while the secreted Wnt antagonist Dkk1 is elevated in postmortem AD brains and brains from transgenic mouse models for AD (Caricasole et al., 2004; Rosi et al., 2010).
