DNA promoter methylation has been associated with the silencing of claudin 4 in bladder carcinoma [19] and claudin 6 and 7 in breast cancer [20,21], and methylation of the claudin 1 promoter has been reported in the colon cancer cell line HCT116 [22], which does not express claudin 1. The gene discussed is CLDN1; the disease is colonic neoplasm.
