The most consistent of these changes and indeed one of the most consistent post-mortem neuropathological changes observed for schizophrenia were reductions in GABAergic markers such as glutamic acid decarboxylase-67 (GAD-67), the synthesizing enzyme for GABA, within the PFC (Akbarian et al., 1995; Guidotti et al., 2000; Volk et al., 2000; Veldic et al., 2005; Akbarian and Huang, 2006) as well as the temporal cortex (Impagnatiello et al., 1998; Heckers et al., 2002; Akbarian and Huang, 2006) and hippocampus (Thompson et al., 2011). This evidence concerns the gene GAD1 and schizophrenia.
