LMNA is encoding lamin A and lamin C by alternative splicing, while ZMPSTE24 is encoding the zinc metalloproteinase ZMPSTE24, which is necessary for the processing of prelamin A to mature lamin A. Therefore LMNA mutations are classified as primary laminopathies whereas ZMPSTE24 mutations are included in the group of the secondary laminopathies. This evidence concerns the gene ZMPSTE24 and laminopathy.
