CD44 and neoplasm: Finally, Mandal et al., using the mouse model of human breast cancer cell metastasis to bone, found that fish oil supplemented with DHA and EPA significantly inhibited mRNA and protein levels of the cell-surface CD44 adhesion molecule (involved in cell-cell interactions, cell adhesion and migration) in the aggressive MDA-MB-231 tumors, thus identifying a novel DHA function in tumor cells that is the targeting of the cell-intrinsic pro-metastatic CD44 molecule expression [86].
