Although the index SNP is independent of the polymorphisms previously reported for type 2 diabetes [54]–[56], PPARG is a particularly interesting candidate as its encoded protein, PPARγ, is a nuclear hormone receptor that serves as a master regulator of adipocyte-specific genes contributing to adipocyte differentiation, susceptibility to obesity, and insulin sensitivity [33]. The gene discussed is PPARG; the disease is type 2 diabetes mellitus.
