As previously observed in human and murine sepsis [44], [45], this shift in the Treg/Teff ratio was probably due to the relative resistance of Tregs to apoptosis [44], [46] rather than to Treg expansion because the total number of CD4+Foxp3+ Tregs in the spleen was not significantly altered (data not shown).
