CCL2 and diabetic kidney disease: Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1, CCL2), an 8 kDa chemokine expressed on the surface of endothelial cells, recruits monocytes to the vascular endothelium (VE) in response to tissue damage signals and has been shown to contribute to the progression of monocyte related inflammatory diseases including atherosclerosis [14], diabetic nephropathy [15], allergic reactions [16] and neuronal inflammation in both peripheral [17] and central nervous systems [18].
