It is not surprising that the majority of biomarkers are listed in the last category—displaying the typical survey of hallmarks of cancer [39] reaching from self-sufficiency in growth signals (Cyclin D1, EGFR, Ki-67, Her2/neu, TGF-α), insensitivity to growth inhibitory signals (TGF-β1, APC, P21), evasion of programmed cell death (Bcl-2, COX-2, NF-κB), limitless replicative potential (Telomerase), sustained angiogenesis (CD105, VEGF), invasion and metastasis (Cadherin, uPA, TIMP), tumor differentiation (MGMT), and cancer-related inflammation (NF-κB, COX-2) (see Table 1).
