In one experimental study, 3 daily IV doses of calcitriol (400 ng) were not effective in reversing HPTH in uremic dogs when PTH was measured 3 days after the first treatment.137 In another study, oral calcitriol dosed at 30–50 ng/kg/day for 14 weeks in dogs with induced renal failure led to significantly decreased appetite and dramatic weight loss despite the lack of hypercalcemia.141 This dose is much higher than what is used clinically today in human and veterinary medicine. Here, PTH is linked to hypercalcemia disease.
