NR5A1 and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism: NR5A1's central role in gonadotrope function is perhaps most clearly demonstrated in mice with pituitary-specific deletion of Nr5a1[9], which display hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, with undetectable basal expression of Lhb, Fshb, and Gnrhr. Studies in cell lines implicate NR5A1 as a direct transcriptional regulator of all three of these genes, as well as Cga[10], [11], [12], [13], [14], [15].
