ASIC1, ASIC2 and ASIC3 seem to have different roles in neurosensory mechanotransduction and are involved in many pathological processes, including neurogenic inflammation, chronic pain, hypertension, heart failure, gastroesophageal reflex disease, irritable bowel syndrome, interstitial cystitis, hearing loss, tooth sensitivity and body balance. This evidence concerns the gene ASIC3 and irritable bowel syndrome.
