The findings that under inflammatory conditions the S100A8/9 complex accounted for up to 40% of the total cytosolic proteins in neutrophils and that secreted S100A8/9 was found at high concentrations in inflamed tissues [12] has led to the hypothesis that S100A8/9 amyloids may be formed in response to chronic inflammation [10] and consequently may enhance the risk of cancer.
