In a most recent article Wanichwatanadecha et al. show that AKR1C1 and AKR1C3 protein levels are upregulated under the influence of HPV16 E6-protein and are modulated by truncated 16E6*I protein in cervical cancer cell lines, implicating a distinct role of the AKR1Cs in HPV-related carcinogenesis [45]. The gene discussed is AKR1C3; the disease is cervical cancer.
