Some driver genes may double as mutator genes; for example, mutation of the intestinal tumour suppressor gene APC is sufficient for tumorigenesis (Lamlum et al. 2000), but may also instigate CIN (Fodde et al. 2001); similarly mutations to the TP53 tumour suppressor are usually considered driver mutations and are associated with genetic instability (Song et al. 2007).
