GSK-3 regulates several members of the B-cell lynphoma-2 (Bcl-2) protein family: it prompts phosphorylation-mediated proteasomal degradation of the anti-apoptotic protein myeloid cell leukemia-2 (Mcl-2) (Maurer et al., 2006; Ding et al., 2007a), whose expression correlates with Ser-phosphorylation dependent inactivation of GSK-3 in diverse cancer cell types (Ding et al., 2007b), whereas a decreased phosphorylation of potential GSK-3 target sequences on Bcl-2 itself contributes to its anti-apoptotic activation (Juhaszova et al., 2009).
