The possible mechanisms behind the cell damage observed include: i) cytotoxic action of Stx2 mediated by the Gb3 receptor in neurons [20], [50]; ii) contribution of peripheral or locally produced pro-inflammatory cytokines and/or chemokines [76]; iii) deleterious collateral effect produced by kidney failure, which could lead to electrolyte disorders and target the brain [76]; and iv) energy depletion by lack of glucose and oxygen intake.
