Based on our findings that both GlyH-101 and MK571 reduced ROS production and ameliorated oxidative stress-induced membrane alterations in beta thalassemia/Hb E erythrocytes, GlyH-101, MK571 and other glutathione efflux inhibitors have potential therapeutic applications in beta thalassemia/Hb E, which may reduce the severity of anemia and other manifestations associated with increased erythrocyte destruction such as iron overload and splenomegaly. Here, GSTM1 is linked to beta thalassemia.
