To discriminate fetal placental tissue, infected erythrocytes and maternal blood in the infected placenta with fluorescence microscopy we combined three separate tags: i) a label for fetal-derived tissue by crossing BALB/c females with actin-CFP C57Bl/6 (B6.Cyan) males; ii) infection of pregnant mice with P. berghei GFP labeled parasites; iii) a label for the maternal blood fluid by Dextran-Rhodamine injection (when applicable) (Figure S1). The gene discussed is CFP; the disease is infection.
