NAFLD and NASH patients and the MCD diet-fed rat model of NASH display enhanced expression of CYP2E1, which is in contrast to all other drug metabolizing CYPs, and elevated lipid peroxidation (Weltman et al., 1996, 1998; Videla et al., 2004) with increased localization to hepatic areas with oxidative stress injuries. This evidence concerns the gene CYP2E1 and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
