Genetic variants in the urea transporter (UT) gene SLC14A were reported to be significantly associated with susceptibility to urinary bladder cancer in a GWAS of European population, whereas SLC5A8 may function as a tumor suppressor gene whose silencing by epigenetic changes may contribute to carcinogenesis and progression of pancreatic cancer [33], [34].
