CD1D and autoimmune disease: Since the discovery that lipid antigens can be presented by the non classical CD1 system [8], CD1d presentation of glycolipids has gained a lot of attention and several studies have described that lipid antigens of non mammalian origin like α-GalCer from sponges can prevent or reduce autoimmune diseases through either boosting NKT cells or the induction of Th2 deviation of the immune response [6]–[10].
