CFTR and hypertensive disorder: Nowadays, despite the relatively high expression of CFTR in the kidney, its role in this organ is still elusive [19] and it has been hypothesized that CFTR could not only secrete but also absorb Cl− across the apical membrane of distal tubules, at least when Na+ absorption is stimulated and the apical membrane potential depolarized [22], therefore contributing to the increased transcellular NaCl reabsorption observed in hypertension.
