While CAV1 promotes and cavin-1 inhibits membrane deformation in these cancer cells, conversely, the production of long membranous structures is exacerbated in CAV1- and cavin-1-expressing Toxoplasma. Regardless of the type of membrane deformations observed in the transfected cells, these findings strengthen the notion that a synergy between CAV1 and cavin-1 is important for proper cell functions, and that cavin-1 regulates CAV1 membrane dynamics. The gene discussed is CAV1; the disease is cancer.
